"Fearless Pilgrim: The Life and Times of John Bunyan"

Binding:
Hardcover
Page Count: 528
Publisher: Evangelical Press
ISBN#: 9780852346808

Monergism Books has just added a recent biography by Faith Cook—Fearless Pilgrim: The Life and Times of John Bunyan. From the publisher's description:
Faith Cook avoids the temptation of merely regarding Bunyan as one of the great figures of English literature. That he certainly is, but he is so much more – a physician of souls, much-loved pastor and powerful preacher of the gospel of grace. The authoress skilfully relates her subject to the political history of his times, in which nonconformists won a greater measure of freedom to worship according to their understanding of the Bible during the Cromwellian period, only to be restricted again after the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660.

Bunyan emerges from this book as a writer of plain yet remarkably imaginative prose, steeped in an amazing knowledge of the English Bible. That knowledge is not just textual: it is deeply experimental, the fruit of much meditation, as The Pilgrim’s Progress particularly shows.
I've enjoyed reading several biographies by Faith Cook and am looking forward to this one. Her writing style is warm, informative, and very encouraging.

Douglas Kelly's Systematic Theology, volume 1: Now Available

I heard about Dr Kelly's work on this multi-volume Systematic a number of years and have been awaiting its availability ever since. It is on my shopping list (and birthday wish list), for sure!

Here are some details:

Publisher's Description: "I have written this first volume, thinking of my heritage as both Reformed and Catholic; gladly appropriating crucial insights of the whole people of God over the last two thousand years - Eastern Orthodox, Western Catholic, and Reformation Protestant - as they sought to live out the foundational truths of the inspired Word of God." - From the Author

640 Pages
Published November 2008

About the Author: Douglas F. Kelly is the Richard Jordan Professor of Theology at the Reformed Theological Seminary, Charlotte, North Carolina. He is a well-known author and has had his books translated into other languages.

Endorsements:

"If this first installment is any indication, Douglas Kelly's three-volume Systematic Theology is sure to set a new standard. Harvesting decades of steady scholarship and equally steady engagement in all facets of the church's life and ministry, Kelly displays the richness of the Christian Faith, particularly in its Reformed expression. Christians of all traditions will benefit greatly from the catholic breadth, appropriate but not bewildering depth, and exegetical insight of this remarkable work."
Michael Scott Horton, J. Gresham Machen Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics, Westminster Seminary, California

"Douglas F. Kelly is one of the English-speaking world's leading Reformed theologians. Here we begin to enjoy the fruits of his labors. What a feast it is. Few Protestant theologians in our day know the terrain of the doctrine of the Trinity, and the Person of Christ, as well as Professor Kelly . . . He is at his best when opening up to us the unrealized importance and glory of these foundational truths about our Savior God. For those who yearn for an orthodox Reformed catholicity, Kelly shows the way forward."
- Ligon Duncan, First Pres. Church, Jackson, Miss. President, Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals.

"Professor Douglas Kelly's eagerly awaited Systematic Theology exceeds all expectation. This first volume is a comprehensive introduction to discussion of God's self-disclosure, Triune being, transcendent majesty, and covenant relationships.
- Iain D. Campbell, Back Free Church of Scotland, Isle of Lewis

Purchase at: WTS | Amazon | CBD | Mongergism

Note: CBD does not currently show a listing for this volume. Hoping that they will in the near future, I have added a link above. The other three booksellers are very competitive on the price. Just remember to consider the cost of shipping when you make your decision.

Concise Reformed Dogmatics by J. van Genderen and W. H. Velema

P&R Publishing has produced a beautiful and sturdy English translation of van Genderen and Velema's Concise Reformed Dogmatics. I want to thank P&R for sending me a review copy a few weeks ago. I have a lot more to read: 995 pages is concise for a Systematic, but it is still a lot to read. Having read a number of blog announcements, I was curious to find out what was so special abou this new Systematic. I am still working at it, but my brief introduction has been wonderful.

Van Genderen and Velema have presented some very fine, contemporary, conservative, evangelical, Dutch Reformed scholarship. While Bavinck's is the most prominent Dutch Reformed Systematic, it is large and only recently, completely made available in English. In comparison, Concise Reformed Dogmatics lives up to its name. The authors have built upon the work of Bavinck and have expanded their treatment by interacting with modern theological scholarship while dealing with each theological loci in a very concise and clear fashion.

A noticable feature of this book is the distinction within the text of general discussion (in standard font size) and technical discussion (in a smaller font size). It is possible to work through the entire volume only reading the text in the standard font size and come away with a clear intorductory understanding of systematic theology. Those interested in digging a bit deeper will be interested in reading the discussions in the smaller print, too.

While it may take me some time to work through this book (and I fully intend to do so) I didn't want to miss the opportunity to say a word about this excellent resource. You definitely ought to consider it!

Here are some details:

Purchase: WTS | Amazon | CBD | Monergism

(At present, your best deal will be to purchase from the WTS Bookstore or Monergism!)

Publisher's Description: Doctrine and life form a unity, the authors believe, and the knowledge and study of theology are of direct importance to ethics, preaching, and the life of faith.

This full treatment of Reformed systematic theology is accessible to church officers and interested lay readers, as well as teachers and students of theology. As in the celebrated Dutch edition, it is formatted with two visually distinct levels of discussion for use either as an introduction to theology or in advanced study.

Drs. J. van Genderen and W. H. Velema provide a complete, single-volume discussion of the many themes that belong in a dogmatics handbook: revelation, God, the decree of God, creation, providence, man as God's image, sin, Christ the mediator, the covenant of grace, salvation, the church, the means of grace, and eschatology. They take into account contemporary problems and deal critically with views of modern theology.

"It is our heartfelt wish that this dogmatics, in which we, in keeping with our confession, recognize Holy Scripture to be the sole binding standard, may help readers to understand what is believed in the church on the basis of the Bible. Dogmatics is focused on the knowledge and service of God. The highest purpose to which we set ourselves in articulating Christian doctrine is the glorification of the name of the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ." - From the preface

995 Pages
Published November 2008

About the Authors:

Dr. J. van Genderen was a professor at the Theological University of the Christian Reformed Churches in the Netherlands in Apeldoorn. He taught dogmatics, the history of doctrine, and symbolics (the creeds).

Dr. W. H. Velema is a professor emeritus at the Theological University of the Christian Reformed Churches in the Netherlands in Apeldoorn. He taught, among other subjects, apologetics, ethics, and homiletics.

Endorsements:

"When an 800 page book has "Concise" in its title, we expect a different perspective. Indeed, this book comes from the Netherlands, the land of Kuyper and Bavinck, where three- and four-volume theology texts are the rule. Indeed, Concise Reformed Dogmatics is immersed in the theological traditions and dialogues of continental Europe, though its main allegiance is to the Scriptures by which, the authors say, all dogmas must be tested. English speaking Christians should be better acquainted with the perspective of our European brothers. In this book we will get that broader picture, while being reminded that good, solid Reformed theology can be found in many locations. So the book edifies in both its similarities and its differences from the way we formulate doctrine."
- Dr. John Frame, Professor of Systematic Theology and Philosophy, Reformed Theological Seminary

"At a time when there seems to be renewed interest in the Reformation and, specifically, the Reformed stream, this concise theology is a wellspring of the best that our confession has to offer in the desert of American religion. This is a treasure to be read again and again, making the heart leap for joy!"
- Michael Horton, J. Gresham Machen Professor of Systematic Theology and Apologetics, Westminster Seminary, California

"For all but a few English speakers, insight into the world of contemporary confessional Dutch Reformed theology is limited to occasional glimpses. This translation opens a helpful, orthodox, window on discussions in the Netherlands and beyond and is a welcome contribution to the renaissance of Reformed dogmatics in our time."
- R. Scott Clark, Professor of Historical and Systematic Theology, Westminster Seminary, California

"In the context of postmodernism's challenge, this 'Dogmatics' connects us with historic Christian doctrine. As a 'Reformed' dogmatics, this summary of classic Calvinism is textured with biblical richness and confessional fidelity. But equally important is the word 'Concise,' for this promises us the kind of accessibility and utility so difficult to package with responsible scholarship. The authors, translators, and publisher have served our generation well!"
- Nelson D. Kloosterman

"This translation is a most welcome example of contemporary conservative dogmatic theology in our post-conservative age."
- Derek W. H. Thomas

"Biblically based, confessionally rooted, and committed to the best of the Reformed tradition, notably Calvin and Bavinck. The authors are conversant with twentieth-century figures from Barth to Pannenberg. They explore a wide range of Dutch theologians. And they engage critical exegesis of Scripture, intellectual movements such a verificationism in philosophy, and social trends such as feminism. The church's mission and pastoral practice are never out of view. Even those who might disagree here and there with a detail will be well rewarded by this thorough and thoughtful work."
- John Bolt

IVP NT Commentary Series (Free Online at BibleGateway)

This is a commentary series I have only recently been introduced to. In many ways it is similar to the very popular Tyndale Commentary Series. I recently purchased M. M. Thompson's commentary on 1, 2, and 3 John and have appreciated what I have found in it. This is a fantastic way to get familiar with more volumes in this series!
Bible students will be happy to know that there are 16 commentaries on New Testament books --- written by noted evangelical scholars --- that are available online for free.

A select few of the commentaries from the IVP New Testament Commentary Series (InterVarsity Press) can be found online at the BibleGateway.com website.

New Testament scholar Donald Carson describes the series this way: "... they are brief, simple, and designed to be immediately nurturing. Quite a few have now appeared, and if several are bland, several others are outstanding (W. Larkin on Acts, I. Howard Marshall on 1 Peter, Linda Belleville on 2 Corinthians, Rodney Whitacre on John)," in New Testament Commentary Survey, 6th ed. (Baker Academic).

Grant Osborne is the series editor, with Haddon Robinson and Stuart Briscoe serving as consulting editors.

The IVPNTC titles are as follows (title links will direct you to the free version at BibleGateway.com):
  • Matthew, Craig Keener
  • Mark, Ronald J. Kernaghan
  • Luke, Darrell L. Bock
  • John, Rodney Whitacre
  • Acts, William J. Larkin, Jr.
  • Romans, Grant R. Osborne
  • 1 Corinthians, Alan F. Johnson
  • 2 Corinthians, Linda Belleville
  • Galatians, G. Walter Hansen
  • Ephesians, Walter L. Liefeld
  • Philippians, Gordon Fee
  • Colossians & Philemon, Robert A. Wall
  • 1-2 Timothy & Titus, Philip Towner
  • 1-2 Thessalonians, G. K. Beale
  • Hebrews, Ray C. Stedman
  • James, George Stulac
  • 1 Peter, I. Howard Marshall
  • 2 Peter & Jude, Robert Harvey & Philip H. Towner

Great Book Buys at CBD

Many have commented on AbeBooks' Most Expensive Sales in 2008 which is mind-boggling, but I love (and I'm sure you do, too) book deals even more. Here are a few that I found a couple of weeks ago, and the deals appear to be still available.

I have, at other times, seen volumes in the New International Biblical Commentary series marked down, but after reading a notice from Chad at The Road to Emmaus, I decided to give this series a closer look. Besides I had a $30 gift certificate to spend and I wanted to get the most bang for my buck.

From my experience the NIBC series is, like most series, hit-and-miss. In other words, while all of the volumes are more than likely very helpful, they probably would not be your first pick. However, many of these volumes will serve the majority of readers very well. As I have used Gerald Wilson on Job, Peter Davids on James, and Christopher Wright on Deuteronomy, I have found them to be similar in some respects and a bit more thorough than the Tyndale Commentary Series (which has been a long-time favorite series). I am very glad to have had this opportunity to become more familiar with this series because I have found a handful of useful volumes by very able commentators.

To this, it must be noted that whereas Hendrickson Publishers previously printed this series in hardback, all of the latest printings and some of the newest volumes are only available in paperback. CBD is offering a very nice selection of these commentaries in hardback at prices less than $5 a piece. Here are the ones I purchased:
Other volumes listed at the same low price are as follows (I didn't purchase these because I am not as familiar with the authors):
Two other books I picked up at excellent prices are:
  • Brevard S. Childs, Biblical Theology: A Proposal (a small paperback booklet) for $1.49. (I've been wanting to read this little booklet for some time now.)
  • Craig Bartholomew, Mary Healy, Karl Moller & Robin Parry (eds.), Out of Egypt: Biblical Theology and Biblical Interpretation for $6.99. (I cannot tell why they have marked this at such a low price, considering the content and the fact that two other volumes in this series are marked at $16.99 each. Whatever, the reason it is a fantastic deal.)
Check them out! And if you find any other great deals, please pass a note to us.

Book Review/Giveaway: Love Divine and Unfailing: The Gospel According to Hosea by Michael P. V. Barrett

This morning my review of the following book was posted at www.sharperiron.org. I would also like to offer a free copy of this book to one our TheoSource readers. The aim of this series (The Gospel According to the Old Testament) is threefold:
  • to illuminate the prevalence of the revelation of Christ in the OT
  • to promote a Christ-centered reading of the OT
  • to encourage Christ-centered preaching and teaching from the OT
I would like to hear your thoughts on this aim. If you would like to enter your name for a chance to win a free copy of this book, please leave a comment on the importance of the aim of this series as set forth above. Do you make a point to discover the gospel in the OT as you read? Do you take care to preach Christ when handling OT passages? What difference has this made in your reading, teaching, and/or preaching?

I'll announce one winner on Tuesday, January 13.
